Audio Production
These days when voice talent are expected to do a bunch of different jobs, it’s good to know you can count on someone who’s got the skills to make it sound great.
Chris has been recording audio in one form or another since his first-ever cassette recorder waaay back in 1970. Yes, 1970. There have been many other tape recorders since then, but the fascination with sound goes back a LONG way. Everything from why certain records sound certain ways to what things sound like backwards or compressed or sped up or slowed down. It’s been a quest to understand sound, all to get a better sounding voiceover recording for clients.
After initial experimenting with home tape recorders, Chris studied audio production at the University radio station, when it still involved marking tape with a grease pencil to make an edit, then slicing it with a razor blade! In the years since, multitrack recorders and computers were incorporated as they became available.
For a while Chris was involved in mobile location recording services of schools, churches and community music groups. A random sampling of these recordings is included here. This usually involved a simple stereo recording made with two microphones through a mixing board into a digital recorder, but sometimes was a much more involved production such as a jazz big band or praise band, requiring many simultaneous channels and microphones.
These days self-contained studios all within a laptop or sometimes a smartphone or tablet are the norm! Chris has the capability to record on the road with a studio mic into his smartphone for best quality on the road if necessary. In the studio, Chris uses Sound Forge Pro for standard voice over recording and Steinberg Cubase Pro for full music production, with a full complement of VST computer instruments available. He also records his “Power Salad” comedy music using this setup. The band has released 6 albums (including one on vinyl!) since 1999 and the productions only get better!
The skills gained & honed doing these productions informs Chris’s ability to produce spots or other audio productions where needed.
