Musician
While it is always a safe bet to go with someone who specializes in one thing, what make VOICEATILE unique is just the opposite! Chris has walked many paths successfully over the years, each path informing the others and all adding up to a wealth of experience and knowledge.
Chris’s first instrument reportedly was linoleum back in the 60s, but he doesn’t remember. And as they say about the 60s, if you don’t remember it….From discovering the record player at the age of two however, that really opened things up. It was the act of listening to tons of music (and later cartoons) over the years that got Chris’s ears into shape, which led to the skills of hearing the musicality of voiceover.
The years of playing along with records at home and with friends in basement bands in New York finally gave way to playing with professional colleagues in the Cleveland/Akron area starting in 1982. From a jazz duo to a large-format wedding band to a full-scale Jazz Orchestra to local symphony orchestras, Chris played with many different formats of musical groups. Between 1986 and 1989 Chris was bassist for the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, a professional jazz repertory big band that has grown into one of the premier arts organizations in Ohio.
The recordings presented are a sampling of recordings from studio and live performances from 1983 to 2005, in many formats. In the Jazz demo, Chris plays upright acoustic, electric and electric fretless bass. In the Performance demo, Chris plays bass and sings lead, all recordings taken from actual live performances.
In addition to what might be called “normal” music, Chris is also a devotee of comedy or novelty music, of the type popularized by legendary radio host Dr. Demento. “He has had a number of ‘hit’ songs on “The Dr. Demento Show” over the years” under various band names, most recently as Power Salad with co-writer Craig Marks. A random Power Salad selection will appear here. A great many of the Power Salad songs are sung in character, in keeping with the VOICEATILE aesthetic.
